As William Shakespeare’s home town, Stratford-upon-Avon offers a wonderful blend of heritage and drama . But there is so much more to this lovely town than the literary great. Take a boat out on the River avon, explore some of Britain's finest historic houses and relax in some of England's most glorious gardens. In no particular order, here are our suggestions for things to do in Stratford:

Shakespeare’s Birthplace Museum

This ancient half-timbered house was where Shakespeare spent his early years. Artifacts include a first edition of Shakespeare’s collected plays, as well as a copy of his will. One of Stratford's most visited attractions. Phone 01789 204016 for more details.

Royal Shakespeare Company

The RSC is now working at five venues in Stratford including the recently opened 1,000-capacity Courtyard Theatre. Visitors are spoiled for choice over where to catch a performance of the Bard's work. Telephone the box office on 01789 403403 or if you would prefer a tour call 01789 403405.

Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm

Just over the river from the RSC, the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm provides a welcome relief from Shakespeare overload. The farm has hundreds of exotic butterflies some with six-inch wingspans flapping around above and sometimes on your head. Highly recommended. Telephone 01789 299288 for further information.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage

This lovely little thatched cottage was the home of Shakespeare’s wife before they married in 1582. The cottage also has beautiful gardens, complete with a maze and sculptures. Step back in time and visit the very room where Shakespeare swept Anne of her feet. Telephone 01789 292100 for more details.
