Farleigh Hungerford Castle, nr Trowbridge

This 14th century castle may have seen better days but it’s still an inspiring site which also has a large chapel. Admission is £2.80 for adults and £1.40 for children from 10am to 5pm. Glastonbury Abbey, Glastonbury

Stunning Abbey set in over thirty acres of lovely parkland, Glastonbury is believed to be the burial site of King Arthur. Admission is £4 for adults and just £1.50 for children every day from 9.30am to 6pm. In the winter the abbey opens half an hour later but half an hour earlier in the summer. Montacute House and Gardens, Yeovil

Montacute is a stunning Elizabeth house packed full of antiques and treasures from the last three hundred years. And if that wasn’t enough, the house was also featured in the popular movie Sense and Sensibility. Admission is £7.40 for adults and £3.70 for the kids but if you just want to see the gardens you only have to pay £3.70 for adults and £1.70 for the kids. Montacute House is open from March to October from 11am to 5pm but the gardens are also open right through the winter from 11am to 4pm on Wednesday to Sunday. Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford

Brilliant collection of cars and bikes with everything from American sports cars to vintage English classics. Entry to the museum is currently £6.50 for adults and £3.50 for the kids from 9.30am till 5.30pm. In the winter months it opens half an hour later and closes at 4pm. Why not try the many things to do in Devon. There's the historic sites of Powderham Castle and Okehampton Castle plus the natural splendor of Blackpool Sands and Pecorama Gardens.

You could also try one of the many wonderful days out in Wiltshire. As well as majestic Stonehenge there is unmissable Longleat and the beautiful open spaces at Stourhead Gardens.
