by Sheila Richardson Somerset is a beautiful area of South West England with the rugged hills of Exmoor giving way to the historic towns of Taunton and Glastonbury. But what else does the county have to offer? In no particular order, here are our suggestions for things to do in Somerset: Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar
Roman Baths, Bath Perhaps the most popular attraction in the Somerset, the Roman Baths is the only naturally occurring hot spring in the United Kingdom. Entry to the baths is currently £9 for adults and £5 for the kids from 9am till 5pm. In the winter months the baths open half an hour later and close half an hour earlier. The Jane Austen Centre, Bath Obviously not for everyone but fans of Jane Austen will certainly enjoy an hour or two at this interesting museum. Admission is £4.50 for adults and £2.50 for children from 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. On Sunday the centre opens half an hour later. The Helicopter Museum, Weston-super Mare This is the largest museum dedicated to helicopters anywhere in the world. With nearly a hundred choppers on display, it's is a great day out for young and old alike. Admission is £4.95 for adults and £2.95 for children from 10am to 5.30pm. From November to March the museum closes an hour earlier at 4.30pm. There's the historic sites of Powderham Castle and Okehampton Castle plus the natural splendor of Blackpool Sands and Pecorama Gardens. You could also try one of the many wonderful days out in Wiltshire. As well as majestic Stonehenge there is unmissable Longleat and the beautiful open spaces at Stourhead Gardens. And finally, if you wanted to travel a little further, you could explore the many attractions in South Wales. In Cardiff there's fantastic Cardiff Castle plus the impressive Millennium Stadium. Outside the capital city you will find interesting things to do such as the Welsh Climbing and Activity Centre. |
