Traveling with children - The Rules

Traveling with children can cause the worst possible start to a holiday. If you are unprepared for every possible eventuality you could be in store for a journey from hell. BUT It doesn't have to be this way. Of course you cannot guarantee a pleasant, event free trip but you can take steps to make it as comfortable as possible.

Entertainment
Your biggest enemy when traveling with kids is boredom. As soon as they get bored problems begin. Make sure you have plenty comics and magazines to keep them occupied. You may worry about your children spending too long playing video games but this is one occasion where you will be thankful for them. If you child has a handheld game machine like Gameboy, buy them a new game for the journey and you wont hear a word out of them. Many airlines also offer a collection of games as part of their inflight entertainment.

Food
Kids can be fussy eaters and airplane food isn't always of the most child friendly variety. And we all know a hungry child isn't usually the most pleasant of creatures. To avoid any problems make a few sandwiches up with their favourite filling and bring a selection of the snacks they like to eat. Although airport terminals are full of fast food outlets, it may be best to avoid any meals that could make your kids feel sick. A child throwing up on an airplane is as much fun for the parents as it is for the poor kid.

Reassurance
For some children flying for the first time or even simply going on a long journey can be frightening. More and more of us are taking our children on holiday and on airplanes at a very young age. Explain to them what is going to happen in advance to give them an understanding of what is to come. During the journey give them plenty of attention and be aware for any signs of apprehension. Usually all they need is a cuddle and a few reassuring words.

Sickness
Always carry a mini first aid kit when you travel with your kids. You don't need to take the whole pharmacy but be prepared for sickness, headaches and cuts and bruises. If your child is on any medication always ensure you have enough for the whole journey including potential delays.
