Choose a county

by Sheila Richardson

The county of Norfolk is a wonderfully relaxing area of Eastern England with majestic countryside and miles and miles of stunning beaches. But what else does the county have to offer? In no particular order, here are our suggestions for things to do in Norfolk:

Sandringham, nr Kings Lyn

The country home of no less than the Queen herself, Sandringham is one of Norfolk's biggest tourist attractions. Only the lower floors are open to the public but with a museum and beautiful gardens, this royal retreat is well worth a visit. Admission to the house, garden and museum is £7 for adults and £4.50 for children. If you want to give the house a miss you only need to pay £5 for adults and £3 for the kids. Sandringham is open from every day from 11am to 5pm April to October, although it does close an hour or so early in October. For further details call 01553 612908 or visit www.sandringhamestate.co.uk

Blakeney Point

Blakeney Point comprises over 3 miles of stunning Norfolk coastline which has become a haven for wildlife. Seals, migrating birds and many other animals can all be seen on this magnificent stretch of beach. For further details call 01263 740480 or go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Roots of Norfolk, nr Dereham

Examining the history of Norfolk, this museum and farm has recently undergone a multi- million pound refurbishment and is now one of the county’s best attractions. Admission is £5.70 for adults and £4.40 for children from 10am to 5pm March through to November. For more information call 01362 860563 or go to www.norfolk.gov.uk/tourism

Norwich Cathedral, Norwich

This wonderful Norman cathedral is one of the most beautiful in all of England. Admission to the cathedral is free for everyone seven days a week from 7.30am to 7pm. The cathedral closes an hour earlier in the winter months. For further details phone 01603 218321 or visit www.cathedral.org.uk

Blickling Hall, Norwich

Blickling Hall is a glorious example of Jacobean architecture with many fascinating antiques and artifacts to be found inside. The extensive gardens are also very impressive. Admission is currently £7.30 for adults and £3.60 for children from Wednesday to Sunday from March through to November. Opening hours are 10.15pm to 5.15pm for the gardens and 1pm to 4.30pm for the Hall itself. For further details call 01263 738030 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk
