Choose a county

by Molly Davidson

Known as the garden of England, Kent is one of the prettiest counties in the United Kingdom. The flower filled fields lead all the way down to the dramatic white cliffs at Dover. Kent is steeped in history with medieval towns, historic castles and towering cathedrals to explore and enjoy. Not many gardens are as memorable as this. Here are some suggestions for a great day out in Kent:

Leeds Castle, Maidstone

Leeds Castle is one of the finest medieval buildings in England. The imposing castle sits in the middle of a lake surrounded by over 500 acres of beautiful parkland. Admission is £12.50 for adults and £9.50 for children every day from 10am to 5.30pm. In the winter the castle closes at 3pm. For further details call 01622 765400 or visit www.leeds-castle.com

Hever Castle, Edenbridge

Hever Castle was built in the 13th century and was once the home of Anne Boleyn. But to be honest the grounds are the real star, with wonderfully landscaped gardens, a stunning lake plus two intriguing mazes. Admission is £8.80 for adults and £4.60 for the children every day from 11am to 6pm March through to November. In March and November the castle closes at 4pm. Chartwell, Westerham

Chartwell was the country home of Winston Churchill and you can see why he enjoyed his time here. The beautiful house is surrounded by lovely gardens with many water features. Entry to Chartwell is £7 for adults and £3.50 for children from 11am to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday. The house is closed to the public from November to mid March. Dover Castle, Dover

Dover Castle was built in the 12th century and since then it has featured prominently throughout English history particularly during war time. Sitting proudly above the white cliffs, it's one of Kent's most popular visitor attractions. Entry to the castle is currently £8 for adults and £4 for the kids every day from 10am till 5.30pm. The caste closes a hour or two earlier in the winter months. For further details call 01304 201628 or go to www.english-heritage.co.uk
