- relaxation techniques can be taught effectively to prevent passengers from becoming tense before and during a flight.

- the underlying reason for your fear can be addressed through counseling or therapy. A psychologist can help you examine you fear and ultimately try to conquer it or he can teach you cognitive techniques to help you deal with the fear when it surfaces

- there are courses, many of which are run by the airlines, specifically for those with a fear of flying. These have proven very successful with thousands of people with a flying phobia. The courses are generally a mix of education, support and practical appliance - the culmination being a controlled flight in an airplane where you can put what you have learnt into practice.

The Final Thought

The fear of flying has very little to do with the risk of a plane crash. Air travel is thirty times safer than driving a car - the risk is very small. In most cases the fear is actually caused by the way air travel highlights our vulnerability. We are forty thousand feet in the air, traveling at 400 mph and we have no control over what's happening. We can't take the pilot's seat and we can't get off until the plane lands. The majority of people can simply accept this but many can't and therefore develop anxiety. Fortunately, this anxiety can be effectively addressed in most people and to extent the phobia cured. They may never travel by air in total comfort but no longer will they allow this fear to effect their lives.
