As a capital city Edinburgh would grace any country in the world. Incredible history, fabulous shops, delicious restaurants and wonderfully friendly people - what more could you possible want? In no particular order, here are our suggestions for things to do in Edinburgh:

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle has stood proud above the city for 1,000 years and was a royal residence until 1571. It's one of Scotland's greatest monuments and should be at the top of anyone's list of things to do in Edinburgh. The best way to soak up the atmosphere inside is to join a tour led by a guide. Royal Scottish Academy

This impressive structure was dramatically renovated at the beginning of the 21st century and now provides a terrific exhibition space to show off the thousands of beautiful pieces from the likes of Monet and Titian. For more details phone

Scottish Parliament

The Scottish Parliament may have been over budget and over deadline but the building was worth the wait. Take the 45-minute tour around the not normally accessible areas or grab a ticket for the public gallery in the debating chamber. Call 0131 348 5411 for further information.

The National Gallery

The National Gallery contains a wonderful collection of some of the finest Scottish and European paintings. Entry is free for all and the gallery opens daily 10am to 5pm. The sheer wealth of great works is quite incredible from Byzantine masterpieces right through to the early 20th century. Telephone 0131 624 6200 for more details.

Why not take a trip to beautiful Edinburgh or lovely Inverness. There are dozens of things to do in Edinburgh and wonderful days out in Inverness to be enjoyed.
