From the Pennine Hills to the limestone cliffs of its North Sea coastline it's a wonderful place to visit. And at the heart of the county lies the city of Durham itself with its majestic castle and cathedral. In no particular order, here are our suggestions for things to do in Durham: Open Air Museum, Beamish
Raby Castle, Darlington Raby Castle is a marvelous medieval castle with wonderful artworks inside and beautiful gardens outside. There is also a deer park and an adventure playground for the kids. Admission is £9 for adults and £4 for children from 11am to 5.30pm May to September. Please check the website below for the latest information on the days when the castle is open to the public. Hamsterley Forest, Bishop Auckland Lying between Teesdale and Weardale on the edge of the North Pennines, Hamsterley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This huge forest is packed full of activities for people of all ages. Entry to the forest is £2 per car every day from 7.30am till dusk. Durham Castle, Durham This World Heritage Site is one of the few Norman castles left standing today. The castle is now used by the University of Durham so entrance is by guided tour only.
