Choose a county

by Sheila Richardson

The county of Cornwall is a truly magical corner of England with hundreds of things to do and places to see. You wont find sandier beaches or more dramatic coastline if you traveled the length and breadth of Great Britain. And from the Eden Project to Rick Stein's restaurants in Padstow, there is something special for people of all ages to enjoy. It may be a long drive for most of us but there really is no better place in England to spend a week or two. Here are some suggestions for a great day out in Cornwall:

The Eden Project, St Austell

The Eden Project has quickly become one of the most visited attractions in England. The huge biomes (essentially big greenhouses) house a spectacular variety of tropical plants and trees. Admission is £12 for adults and £5 for children from 9.30 to 6pm. In the winter the Eden Project closes a little earlier at 4.30pm. For further details call 01726 811900 or visit www.edenproject.com

Minack Theatre, Porthcurno

This extraordinary open air theatre carved into the Cornish cliffs was built largely by one woman, Rowena Cade, in the 1930's. It truly is a memorable place, and should be right at the top of your list of things to do in Cornwall. Admission is £2.50 for adults and £1 for the children every day from 9.30am to 5.30pm. In the colder months the theatre opens from 10am to 4pm. For more information call 01736 810810 or go to www.minack.com

Tate, St Ives

Set right above the beach, the Tate St Ives is a wonderful location to appreciate modern art. It's certainly worth two or three hours of your time. Entry to the Tate is currently £5.50 for adults but children are completely free! Opening times are 10am to 5.30pm March through to October and 10am to 4.30pm during the rest of the year. For further details call 01626 890243 or go to www.tate.org.uk/stives

Colliford Lake Park, Bodmin Moor

Colliford Lake Park is a great place for kids to have fun indoors and, when the weather permits, outdoors as well. With eight acres of woodland, thirty acres of farm stock with sheep, goats and red deer plus several play areas, you wont be short of things to do. Admission is currently £5.50 for adults and £4.50 for children from 11am to 6pm Easter through to October. For further details call 01208 821469 or go to www.collifordlakepark.com
