How to make your house safe and secure

Home Security: safe as houses

We all like to feel safe in our own home. But how safe are we really? Are our belongings secure and more importantly are we secure? There's no way to make your home fully intruder proof but there are many steps you can take to substantially increase your levels of security and safety. They may cost you a few pounds but speaking from experience (I was burgled earlier this year) they are worth every single penny.

Windows

Windows are the favorite point of entry for most burglars mainly because people have a tendency to leave them open. But apart from closing your windows when you go out, what other security measures should you take:

- fit locks to every window in your house or as many as you can and remember to lock them when you go out

- pay particular attention to the windows where a burglar is most likely to try to break in through i.e. downstairs, at the rear of the property, those near a drainpipe or the roof of an adjoining building such as a garage

- don't think that skylights used in typical loft conversions are safe because of their height. These are a popular method of entry for burglars because they are very rarely locked and often left open.

- french windows are a magnet for Mr Burglar so make them as secure as possible

Doors

Although doors are less susceptible to break ins (mainly because they're usually locked) they can still be a real weakness in your home security. However, there are many steps you can take to make them less vulnerable:

- the bulkier the door the better. Too many front and back doors are so lightweight that they can forced by even the smallest of thieves.

- it's important to fit good locks to any door through which a burglar can gain access to your house.

- a solid chain not only allows you to open the door and feel safe but it adds an extra level of resistance

- you may think a spy hole is only for old ladies but it's always best to check out who's at your door before opening it.

Visibility

The best way to make your property safe from burglars is to not give them any cover where they feel shielded from your neighbours and passers by. Unfortunately this means chopping down your trees and hedges to a favourable height which ultimately comprises your privacy. It's a tough decision to make.
