6. Don't cut corners with fragile items

You're simply asking for trouble if you fail to pack your fragile items with real care. If China and glassware will almost definitely arrive at your new home in pretty little pieces if they aren't packed properly.

7. Cover furniture

Of all the potential damage to your belongings during a move, scratches to furniture are amongst the most common and the most annoying. Because furniture isn't fragile, like say a vase, they do tend to be treated with little care by removal men. So always cover your furniture from top to toe (including the legs) with a sheet or table cloth.

8. Bubble wrap until you drop

In terms of protecting your belongings, bubble wrap is the undisputed king. Of course it's not impenetrable, but it will prevent the majority of dents and scratches.
