How green is home insulation and is some better for the environment than others?

All home insulation is good for the environment because it reduces the amount of fuel used to heat the property and therefore the levels of Co2 emitted.

However, it's worth noting that not all insulation is equally green. In fact, some is considerably better for the environment than others.

This green disparity lies in the embodied energy of the insulation you buy. In other words, the energy used for procuring and the transporting your insulation.

Most traditional insulation doesn't score particularly well in terms of embodied energy but those made of wool or recycled paper favour much better.

There is also the issue of whether the man made forms of insulation are harmful to you or the environment. Of course, they cant be that bad, otherwise you wouldn't be able to buy them. However, man made insulation still comes with a warning to wear gloves, a mask and goggles when handling. Does that sound perfectly safe to you?
