Plants are living creatures just like human beings and like us they're susceptible to infection and disease. In your garden you are the doctor, nurse and surgeon rolled into one so you need to be aware of the potential problems facing your plants. There are literally hundreds of plant diseases but the seven most common are:

1. Clubroot

This cabbage and cauliflower killer can contaminate soil for well over fifteen years. The disease affects the plant root causing abnormalities and stunting growth. It has a particular fondess for risk from soil which is wet and acidic. If your plant develops the disease the best thing you can do is burn it and remove as much of the soil from the surrounding area. Damage limitation is the key.

2. Damping off

This garden fungus attacks all varieties of seeds. It can spread extremely quickly so you must act fast if you spot it. It wont necessarily kill your seeds but it will prevent healthy growth and spreading. The best way to prevent this fungus is to ensure pots and seed trays are free from germs and infection.

3. Honey fungus

This disease produces a white fungus on the roots and hanging fungus under the bark. Fungal chemical will kill honey fungus but you must still always remove the affected area to prevent spreading.
