A little bit of moisture here and there may seem like a trivial matter but it can reduce the value of your house by several thousand pounds. It's vitally important to regularly check the places around your home where damp can develop. The most common areas are as follows:Roof Although you're unlikely to be able to get up on your roof to check for weaknesses, you should from time to time have a good look from ground level or from a ladder. In particular you should look out for broken tiles and the areas around flashing and chimney stacks. Downpipes Downpipes can be easily blocked by leaves and other debris which can cause drainage problems in the guttering which in turn can contribute to damp. You should inspect drainpipes regularly especially in autumn when the leaves begin to fall from the trees.
Much like downpipes, guttering can become blocked with all kinds of debris. Five minutes clearing them out could potentially save you hundreds of pounds in the future. Air vents Poor air flow is one of the main causes of damp in a property. It's therefore crucial that all air vents in a house are fully operational and free from blockages. Once again a few minutes once a month could save your bank account from taking a sizeable blow. |
