- take note of the type of new houses being built in the area. Upmarket flats and town houses are a good sign that an area is heading in the right direction.

- look at the people who are living in the area. If every second person you see is a pensioner, it's unlikely that the town will move forward quickly. Whereas if there is a healthy sprinkling of smartly dressed business people and young families, you can be confident about the town's prospects.
