Is Malaysia a safe destination for having medical surgery abroad?

Malaysia may not be the first country you think of when considering medical treatment abroad. But with it's modern capital Kuala Lumpur, this Asian territory has a great deal to offer.

Not only is English widely spoken, but the private health service is generally excellent, offering some of the lowest prices you will find anywhere in the world. Malaysia provides a full range of medical care from fertility treatment and obesity surgery to laser eye correction and cosmetic procedures.

The costs of health treatment in Malaysia are up to 50% less than the prices you will find in the UK or the US. For example, breast implants costs under £2,500 in Malaysia, whereas you can expect to pay at least £4,000 in the UK. A facelift costs at least £5,000 in the UK, while in Malaysia you will pay no more than £3,000.

Standards of care are high, with many surgeons and doctors training in the UK. All private medical centres must be licensed by the Malaysian Ministry of Health which helps discourage inferior clinics and surgeons from operating.

However, like most countries, Malaysia has it's share of below average clinics and hospitals. The risks of complications will be invariably greater in such medical practices. Therefore, always choose a well-established clinic and an experienced surgeon or practitioner. Don't put health at risk just to leave a few more pounds in your pocket.
