Continued from page 1 Common reasons why parents break this timetable Despite the importance of following the immunisation timetable, a surprising number of parents fail to do so. In most cases they wrongly think they have a genuine reason for a delay or a missed appointment. However, only exceptional circumstances should prevent you from sticking to the recommended time frame. The following are not valid reasons for not getting your child vaccinated:- if the child is being breast fed - if the child has a minor infection such as a cold - if the child has a history of allergies - if there is a previous instance of Immunisation problems amongst your family - if your child has asthma or hay fever - if your family has a history of bowel disease or autistic disorders If for some reason your child is over the recommended age period for an injection get them injected as soon as possible. The worst thing you can do is think, well I've missed the time frame so I wont get it done at all. The Final Thought To a new mother this long list of potential viruses and the injections required to avoid them can be frightening. However, there is very little to worry about. Apart from the concern about the MMR vaccine we have an extremely thorough and successful vaccination program in this country. All you have to do is remember when your child needs each vaccine and then you can focus on the positive aspects of being a mum - like all those dirty nappies. |
