Back pain is one of the few medical issues that Western medicine still struggles to solve. Despite our best efforts, we cannot develop a drug or method of treatment to effectively address this common problem.

This is one of the mains reasons why the traditional Chinese technique of acupuncture is believed to be the best form of treatment for back pain. Studies have shown that acupuncture improves more cases of back pain, particularly in the lower back, than any comparable Western medicine.

The evidence is so conclusive that the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends that acupuncture be used to treat lower back pain by the NHS. This is one of the very few alternative medicines acknowledged by the institute.

The main benefit of acupuncture for back pain is that it works. However, it is also a very cost effective form of treatment, and it doesn't involve the consumption of unnatural drugs.

Although acupuncture can be used as a stand alone treatment for back pain, best results are often achieved through a combination of methods. A treatment plan involving painkillers, special back exercises, as well as acupuncture can lead to the greatest improvements.

It's also important to continue with your normal activities as much as possible. Studies have shown that resting your back too much can in fact cause a deterioration in your condition

As the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends acupuncture for back pain, you should be able to have the treatment for free at you local NHS hospital. If the procedure is not available, you'll find acupuncture clinics in most major towns and cities in the UK. Prices are relatively low, and range from 30 to 50 per session.
