A healthy diet is important for every woman. But it gains added significance for women who are pregnant or those trying to get pregnant. What you eat can have a substantial effect on your potential son or daughter.

What to eat during pregnancy/when attempting to conceive?

- fruit and vegetables providing vitamins and minerals
- fish in particular oily varieties such as sardines and fresh tuna
- lean strips of meat and chicken providing high levels of protein
- food high in starch such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes
- dairy products which gives you the calcium your body needs
- pregnant women are prone to iron deficiency so eat a good mix of bread, red meat and green vegetables to maintain healthy levels of iron in your body
- folic acid which reduces the risk of the spina bifida in babies

What to avoid during pregnancy/when attempting to conceive?

- excessive alcohol
- excessive caffeine
- unpasturised milk
- raw eggs
- certain exotic fish which contain high levels of mercury e.g. Shark and swordfish
- liver dishes which can contain dangerously high levels of Vitamin A
- products containing peanut in their is a history of allergies in you or your partner's family
