The Emmerdale Disasters

Until 1993, Emmerdale was very much a second rate soap. It lagged well behind Eastenders and Coronation Street in terms if popularity and viewing figures. The public felt that Emmerdale was just too boring. How exciting can a programme centred around a farm be?

The producers recognized this fact and decided to inject some drama into the flagging soap. A sensational plotline involving a plane crashing in the village was written, and almost overnight the show was transformed.

Disasters and tragedies get bums on seats, so over the next few years, Emmerdale had one every other week. As well as the famous Woolpack explosion, the curse of Emmerdale has resulted in:

- Dave Glover being killed a fire after Biff and Linda's wedding (1996)
- Frank Tate dying from a sudden heart attack (1997)
- Pete and Butch killed in a bus crash (2000)
- Sarah Sugden dying in a barn fire (2000)
- Mrs Strickland killed in a car accident (2001)
- Zoe burning the Church down (2002)
- Chris Tate committing suicide (2003)
- Trisha Dingle crushed by the Woolpack chimney in a storm (2003)
- The vicarage accidentally going up in flames (2006)
