The Sun Hill fire is perhaps the most famous storyline in the history of The Bill. The episode aired on April 2002 and attracted a whopping
8.6 million viewers, 2.5 million more the average edition of The Bill.
After Chief Inspector Derek Conway dies, his former colleague Inspector Andrew Monroe organises a memorial fund for him. Superintendent Tom Chandler makes a huge donation and PC Reg Hollis and PC Des Taviner are determined not to be upstaged.
Des steals some money from a gang of youths and adds the money to the fund. However, shortly afterwards he finds out that the money is counterfeit, and so decides he has no choice but to try to destroy it.
Des uses the cover of local disturbances in the area, to throw a petrol bomb into Mr. Monroe’s office where the money was being kept. Unfortunately, several gas canisters were hidden away in the room causing a huge explosion that decimates the police station.
The tragic events leaves six police officers dead. The unfortunate Sun Hill coppers were:
