Coronation Street History

Coronation Street was first broadcast on ITV on Friday December 9th 1960, making it is Britain's longest-running television soap opera. The Manchester based show was created by Tony Warren and is set in in the fictional industrial town of Weatherfield.

Coronation Street, or Corrie as it's often known, can be seen on ITV1 on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30p.m. There is also an extra episode every Monday at 8:30 p.m.

Coronation Street Guest Stars

Coronation Street has had it's fair share of famous guest stars over the years. Here are some of the highlights:

- Comedian Peter Kay played a shoplifter in 1997 and then when he became famous, made a cameo appearance in January 2004 as Eric Gartside (Shelley Unwin's memorable date).

- Bond girl Honor Blackman played Rula Romanoff, an ageing swinger who wanted to wife swap with Norris and Rita.

- Davy Jones of The Monkees has made two appearances on the soap, firstly in 1961 and again in 1972 as Edna Sharples' grandson Colin Lomax.

- Cliff Richard appeared in a scene, but only with his back to the camera. However, he is clearly identifiable by his jumper which had the words Rock and Roll written across the back of it.

- Joanna Lumley played Elaine Perkins, a girlfriend of Ken Barlow, way back in 1973.

- Norman Wisdom played fitness fanatic Ernie Crabbe in in 2004.

- Zöe Lucker, who went on to find fame as Tanya Turner in Footballers' Wives, played Sonia Leach in 1996.

- Martin Shaw, who would later play Doyle in The Professionals, made an appearance as hippy Robert Croft in 1968.

Coronation Street Top 7 Facts

1. The very first swear word heard on Corrie was uttered by Ken Barlow in January 1961. The rather harmless "bloody" caused quite a stir at the time.

2. The video for the Queen's song I Want to Break Free (the one where the band are dressed as women) was intended as a homage to Corrie.

3. Queen Elizabeth II is a regular watcher of the comings and goings in Weatherfield.

4. Sir Ian McKellen is a huge fan of the show and made several guest appearance in 2005.

5. Legendary actor Laurence Olivier wanted to make an appearance on the soap but scheduling problems prevented him from doing so.

6. Status Quo rockers Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt appeared in four episodes of what is their favourite programme in 2005.

7. HRH Prince Charles made an appearance on Corrie's 40th Anniversary episode (2000). He had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Audrey Roberts.
