Holby City History

Holby City began life in January 1999 as a spin-off from the BBC's long running hospital drama series Casualty. Named after the Holby City Hospital in which Casualty is set, the programme follows the lives of staff and patients at the fictional medical building.

The show was originally commissioned as a series only to be shown during the winter schedule. Executives thought the public wouldn't want another fifty-two week a year hospital drama. However, the Casualty spin off proved so successful, BBC bosses decided to turn the show into a soap style, all year round programme.

Just as Holby City was a spin off from Casualty, Holby itself is to give birth to it's own subsidiary series. Police drama Holby Blue is currently in the early stages of production. Viewers can expect to see the new show from early 2007.

When Holby City Met Casualty

There have been four occasions where Holby City and it's sister programme Casualty have come together for specific story lines. These hospital crossover episodes are as follows:

- The 2004 Christmas special where a fuel tanker lorry crashed into the Accident & Emergency department of Holby City Hospital. Casualty character Jim Brodie died whilst trying to rescue his colleagues from the fire which ensued.

- The August 2005 miniseries which formed part of the BBC's DoNation season, designed to raise the profile of organ donation issues. Viewers voted interactively for one of two patients to receive an organ donation.

- The week-long Halloween crossover in 2005 featuring a sudden outbreak of youth violence in the Holby region.

- The 2005 Casualty Christmas special which saw the return of former Holby City character Mr Nick Jordan (Michael French) and several other staff members after a major road collision.
