Eastenders History

The BBC television soap opera EastEnders was first broadcast on February 19th 1985. Set in the fictional London Borough of Walford, however, the show is focused around the inhabitants of the equally fictional Albert Square.

EastEnders is filmed at the BBC Television Studios at Elstree in Hertfordshire. Four episodes are filmed per week, usually between about 6–8 weeks prior to broadcast.

EastEnders is currently aired at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, and 8.00 p.m. on Monday and Friday. The omnibus is shown on Sunday afternoon, at various times each week.

Eastenders Top Facts

1. Before finding fame with the Spice Girls, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) appeared briefly as a troubled teenager on Albert Square.

2. Leslie Grantham originally auditioned for the role of Pete Beale but was considered too good looking for the fruit and veg market trader. The BBC producers had another part in mind for the young actor - Dirty Den Watts.

3. The Albert Square set is built on the area of ground last used in the 1980s television series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

4. The Queen visited the Eastenders set in 2001 and was shown around The Queen Vic and Albert Square by Wendy Richard and Barbara Windsor.

5., The Eastenders theme tune was updated in 1993 to a more modern version. However, the new soundtrack proved very unpopular with viewers. Eleven months later the BBC producers reverted back to the original theme tune, albeit a slightly remixed version.

6. Pop star Robbie Williams made a cameo appearance on the show, standing in the Queen Vic pretending to use the telephone.

7. When BBC America took EastEnders off the air in 2003, Brad Pitt and his then wife Jennifer Anniston joined a petition of US fans demanding the channel reinstate the UK soap.

8. Albert Square is based on the real life Fassett Square' which can be found in London's East end.

No, we're not talking about some of the less attractive female members of the cast. We mean the actual four legged fellows. Albert Square has been host to a wide variety of mutts, pooches and canines, and here they all are:

- Roly, a Poodle, owned by Den Watts, Pat Butcher and Frank Butcher, and Sharon Watts (1985-1993)

- Willy, a Pug, owned by Ethel Skinner (1985-1992)

- Ernie, Ethel's Pug replacement for Willy.

- unspecified puppy, owned by David Wicks and Sam Mitchell (1996)

- Freida, a Greyhound, owned by Grant Mitchell and Nigel Bates

- Wellard, a Tervuren Belgian Shephard Dog, owned originally by Robbie Jackson and later by Gus Smith (1994-present)

- Terrence, a Lhasa Apso, owned by Billy Mitchell, Janine Butcher, Terry Raymond, Pat Evans and Honey Edwards (2001-present)

- Genghis, mongrel owned by Keith and Rosie Miller (2004-present)

- Betty, a Cairn Terrier, owned by Pauline Fowler (2004-present)

- Chips, a present to Ian Beale from his partner Jane Collins and children Peter and Lucy (2006-present)

- Dalgliesh, Jack Edwards' dog (2006-present)
