Gastrointestinal bypass | Roux en-Y operation | NHS treatment | Laparoscopic operation | Gastric bypass in the UK | Roux en-Y bypass costs | Laparoscopic surgeries | After the operation

You should be able to have a gastrointestinal bypass on the NHS in the UK, assuming you meet the criteria set out by your local Primary Care Trust. However, in reality, qualifying for treatment is only half the battle.

Not all local hospitals in the UK provide full funding for obesity treatment, and those that do tend to have very long waiting lists. Applying for funding, and then waiting for an available surgery slot can take many months.

The problem is money. Hospitals in the UK are struggling to provide a full range of services within their allocated budgets. Cuts are inevitable, and unfortunately wight loss treatment is one of the areas to suffer. This is one of the main reasons why so many women in the UK are having obesity treatment at private clinis, or on a private basis at an NHS hosptial.

There are a number of excellent private clinics in the UK providing Roux en-Y gastric bypass treatment, as well as a range of other obesity procures. In England, two of the best obesity specialists are the BMI Beardwood Hospital in Blackburn, and the Spire Manchester Hospital. If you live in Wales, you should try either the The Vale Hospital in Hensol or the Spire Cardiff Hospital. For a gastric bypass in Scotland, look no further than the BMI Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen or the Nuffield Health Glasgow Hospital. And finally, for obesity surgery in Northern Ireland, the Belfast Vita Clinic is hard to beat.

You can, of course, choose to have a gastrointestinal bypass outside of the UK. Medical tourism is increasingly popular, with a growing number of women attracted by the sizable savings on offer. In some countries, the cost of a Roux en-Y bypass is up to 50% cheaper than prices in the UK.

However, having surgery abroad will invariably increase your chances of receiving inferior treatment or experiencing unforeseen complications. Although there are many fist class obesity clinics around the world, there are also a number of poor ones. The medical industry in the UK is tightly regulated to ensure high overall standards of care and treatment. Few countries, particularly those with considerably lower prices, provide this same level of protection.
