How many calories do I need?

Although the recommended daily allowance is 2000 calories for women and 2500 for men, these are very loose guidelines. Each person's caloric needs are determined by their weight, height, age, gender and levels of physical activity. For example 2000 calories aren't enough for a 5ft 10 female swimmer who weighs eleven stone. She would not be able to function effectively on so little energy.

Are all calories the same?

In terms of nutritional value, all calories are not the same. Calories from protein and carbohydrates are better for your overall health than those from fat. For a balanced diet no more than one third of our daily calorie intake should come from fat. But remember fats aren't the enemy. Our body needs essentials fats to function properly.

The Final Thought

We have become obsessed with counting calories and trying to eat as few as possible. But remember calories are simply the measurement of energy each food contains. If we don't eat enough of them our bodies wont be able to perform effectively You may lose the odd pound or two but is that really worth tiredness, under performance at work and increased risk of illness? By all means keep and eye on your calorie intake. Just don't take your eye of the bigger picture.
