We all know the relationship between what we eat and how we look but their is also a relationship with how we feel. Mental health can effect by our diet in the same as our physical health. However these effects can be of a negative nature as well as a positive one.

Positive effects of food on our mind

We've all heard of foods that are good for the brain. This may sound like an old wives tales but it is based in fact. Fruit and vegetables and foods containing essential fatty acids such as tuna, salmon and walnuts have been shown to be good for mental health. The brain cannot store glucose and therefore needs a continuous source of fuel from foods. Prunes, fatty fish, blueberries and strawberries all have a positive effect on the mind particularly in terms of short term memory. But like all dietary issues, the key to a happy head is a healthy balanced diet.

Negative effect of food on our mind

There is evidence to suggest that many artificial flavorings and preservatives can adversely effect our mental well being. Violent moods swings are prevalent in people who have a diet high in these types of food. Although products loaded with sugar and e numbers may give us an instant energy burst they can also cause depression and a feeling of exhaustion once the buzz wears off.

Millions of people also suffer from an intolerance to certain food types. Sensitivity to dairy products is thought to be the most common form of this condition. This can cause depression which although temporary can reoccur every time you consume such products. And for many of us that can be every time we have a cup of tea. The problem with food intolerance is that the majority of people don't realize they have them. You wouldn't necessarily think your mood swings are down to the bowl of cereal you have in the mornings.

The Final Thought

Everything we eat and drink has an effect on our mind as well as our body. These effects may be tiny but over time they build up and the cumulative effect in some cases they can be severe. However this doesn't mean you have to conduct an examination of everything you put in your mouth. Like most things in life, moderation is the key. All that is needed is a little care and attention. And remember You Are What You Eat isn't just a television show - it's a fact
