Question

We've all heard of ginseng, but what exactly is it and what are its benefits?

Ginseng is derived from the root of the ginseng plant. Although there are several different types of ginseng, the three most common are Panex ginseng (also known as Chinese or Korean ginseng), American ginseng and Siberian ginseng.

Perhaps the main benefit taking ginseng is its ability to help the body fight off illness. Research has demonstrated its ability to encourage the production of immune cells designed to neutralize potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.

However, ginseng is also widely used to help alleviate stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that it actively helps support the glands involved in the production of stress hormones within the body.

Panex ginseng also has a mild effect on men who suffer from infertility or impotence due to its ability to marginally increase both sperm and testosterone levels.

However, many people simply take ginseng as a general tonic to aid overall well-being, rather than to address any specific health condition. Not only does the herb help boost the immune system, as previously mentioned, but it is also believed to increase energy levels.

Side effects from taking ginseng are rare, and you are unlikely to experience any problems as long as you don't exceed the recommended daily allowance. However, in a small number of cases, the supplement has caused nausea, diarrhea, headaches, and either high or low blood pressure. If you are unsure, speak to your doctor before taking ginseng, or any other natural remedy.

But before you rush out to your local vitamin shop or supermarket to buy ginseng, you should be aware that not all ginseng products are the same. As you would expect, the better the quality of the product, the more you will be expected to pay for it. Cheaper products containing inferior ginseng may not provide the health benefits you were looking for.
