What is so special about yoga - isn't it just stretching? There is a tendency amongst skeptics to see yoga as just a series of postures. But it's the involvement of the mind that takes it far beyond simple stretching. Connecting the mind and body and focusing on breathing allows us to become more aware of our movements and ultimately gain more form them both physically and mentally. Is yoga the same as pilates? Many of the techniques used in Yoga have been incorporated into the current exercise of choice Pilates. Both are low impact forms of exercise with a focus on posture, flexibility and concentration. However there are differences. Pilates uses a series of machines and tools where yoga only uses the occasional strap or weight. Also in Yoga you move from one static position to another, whereas in Pilates your maintain your posture and perform movements from there. Does yoga require flexibility? No, yoga is suitable for everyone. In fact yoga is ideal for those who have problems moving and stretching. The beginners levels of yoga are designed to be practicable by everyone. They establish increased flexibility which enable you to move onto the more advanced stages. |
