There is a temptation to view overeating as little more than greed. However, compulsive overeating can be a very serious disorder that can result in severe physical and mental problems.

What is Compulsive Overeating?

Compulsive overeating is a disorder causing the consumption of large amounts of food usually in an uncontrollable binging manner. The disorder encourages the individual to continue to eat even after they feel totally full which can cause severe discomfort. Although compulsive overeating affects both men and women it is twice as prevalent among females.

Why do people overeat?

Sometimes people eat to much simply because they like it. But usually there's an underlying reason for it. These are the most common:

- boredom

- depression

- stress

- bulemia

- trying to stop smoking

There is also a long list of psychological disorders that can lead to overeating including hypoglycemia, tapeworms, grave disease and diabetes. Many forms of medication have overeating side effects such as steroids, antibiotics and antidepressants.
