The Ornish Diet was created by cardiologist Dr Dean Ornish in his book Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease. The diet is based around his research into heart disease. Dr Ornish has shown that the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries can be prevented and, indeed, reversed. Through this low fat, low cholesterol Ornish eating plan you could lose weight and dramatically improve your health.
What does the plan involve?
The Ornish diet involves eliminating almost all fat from your diet and therefore consuming fewer calories. This plant based eating plan allows you to derive no more than 10% of your daily calories from fat. By avoiding all fatty foods, your portion sizes do not need to be restricted.
Food and recipes
Under the Ornish diet, you are permitted three meals and two snacks a day. The diet is comprised mainly of pulses, grains, fruits and vegetables. Anything high in fat is restricted, and that includes nuts, seeds and even avocados.
The program sensibly recommends at least thirty minutes of moderate activity a day, or sixty minutes times a week. Stress management techniques, such as yoga, are also recommended.
Eating out when on the Ornish diet will be difficult unless you choose restaurants with very low fat options. The plan prohibits caffeine but allows a moderate intake of alcohol. However, the program should be suitable for vegetarians.
The Ornish eating plan has not been linked to many celebrities but you can be sure that any number of stars have tried the program. Whether they successfully lost weight with the ornish program is another question.
Does the plan work?
The Ornish Diet will help you lose eight because the low levels of fat and healthy lifestyle that it promotes. The diet has also been clinically proven to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol and reverse cardiovascular disease. However, it's important to remember that your body needs some fatty acids to function properly. Care should be taken to ensure that a low fat diet doesn't become a no fat diet.
