The Beverly Hills Diet is a six-week weight loss program developed by Judy Mazel in 1981. The diet focuses on eating fats, proteins and carbohydrates in the right combinations to improve health and help weight management. But does it really work? Read on to find out.

What does the plan involve?
The Beverly Hills Diet states that eating protein at the same time as carbohydrates causes poor digestion. Fats can be eaten with either protein or carbs but never with fruits. Fruit should be eaten alone as it is digested much quicker than other foods. The original Beverly Hills Diet restricted certain food groups but due to much criticism the New Beverly Hill Diet includes foods from all food groups.

Food and recipes
The Beverly Hills diet involves eating fruit for breakfast followed by meals of either protein and fat or carbohydrates and fat. All foods are allowed but remembering never to mix protein with carbohydrates.

Exercise
The program does not give mention to the need for regular exercise. Followers are expected to deal with this aspect of losing weight on their own.

Practicality
Eating out when on the Beverly Hills diet shouldn't pose too much of a challenge, provided you fully understand the rules. Alcohol is allowed in certain situations but caffeine is not permitted. There is no need to buy foods under the plan. The program should be perfectly suitable for vegetarians.

Celebrity followers
The Beverly Hills eating plan has allegedly been used by a large number of celebrities in the UK and the US. Stars such as Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson are rumoured to have lost weight with this slimming program

Does the plan work?
The theory of food combinations upon which the Beverly Hills Diet is based has never been proven. Whilst it's true that different foods are absorbed and digested by the body at different rates, any direct links between food combination and weight loss are simply not founded. The Beverly Hills Diet may help you lose weight because of its low-calorie nature, but it's a time-consuming and potentially nutritionally damaging way to do so.
