What is creatine and why do people take creatine supplements ?

Creatine is a naturally occurring substance in the body made up of the amino acids - argine, glycine and methionine.

It's produced in the liver, pancreas and kidneys and is used predominantly to provide energy to your muscles. It is therefore a vital resource for anyone who leads a particularly active life with regular spells of intense physical activity.

This is the very reason why you can buy a variety of creatine supplements and why a significant number of athletes and bodybuilders use them.

There has been much debate over the benefits and indeed the risks of taking creatine supplements. However, the truth is there is no real risk, just as long as you don't dramatically exceed the recommended dosage. In terms of the benefits, creatine supplements are by no means a miracle worker but they can make a difference to physical performance and endurance.
