You're starting a new job - great! But with a new job comes the first day at a new job. This can be a daunting experience. You just know something is bound to go wrong. However, it doesn't have to be this way. With a few words of advice you will be ready for anything the day brings and it will be home time before you know it. Be prepared You should prepare for your first day at a new job just like you prepared for the interview that got you the job. Learn as much as you can about the company, their history and their philosophies Not only will it help you feel settled but it will create a good impression with your new employers. Knowledge is power and the power to be obtained here is a sense of confidence.
Being late on your first day is just about as bad as it gets. Not only will it create a poor impression but you will arrive at the office in a terrible state. Planning for all eventualities is the key to arriving on time. If you are driving in, leave much earlier than you would usually do. You have to legislate for bad traffic even if the route you take is usually fairly clear. If you are using public transport have a back up plan at hand. For example if there is an accident on the train line causing lengthy delays, know which alterative route you can take or what alternative forms of transport you should use. What to wear On your first day at a new job conservatism is the key. You should always try to wear the suit you are most comfortable in but not if it's a skirt that shows every inch of your legs. Make sure you suit is properly ironed and pressed and your shoes perfectly polished. Of course after a few weeks, once you settle in, you can revert back to your standard levels of attire.
