MAC
MAC stands for Migration Authorization Code. This number allows you to migrate from one broadband provider to another.

Mbps
Mbps is short for Megabits per second. This is a measure of how quickly data can be transmitted.

Modem
A modem is a device that allows a PC to connect to the internet via your telephone line. In the past they tended to be separate devices that had to be plugged in, but they are now inbuilt within computers.

Pay-as-you-go broadband
This payment plan means you only pay for your actual broadband usage. Your bill is based on the time you spend online.

Protocol
This is basically a command or message sent from one computer or network to another.

Router
A router is a device that allows you to set up your own home network. It connects the Internet Service Provider’s network together with the LAN at home through a single broadband domain. To put it simply, it allows you to connect several computers through one internet connection and therefore avoid the expense of connecting each individually.

Satellite Broadband
This uses a satellite connection to provide a permanent connection to the internet rather than the standard ADSL.

Speed
This is the rate at which you can receive downloads. Broadband connections are normally between 256kbps and 8Mbps although they can be much higher.

Streaming
Streaming allows the user to watch a movie or listen to music as the download commences in the background. In most cases the data is not physically transferred to your computer.

Unlimited Download
Broadband packages with unlimited download allow you to download as much as you like.

Upload
Uploading is the process of transferring files from your computer to the internet.

Usage Cap
Many broadband packages limit or 'cap' the amount of material you you can download over a set period.

VOD
VOD is short for Video on Demand which is a video feed that can be viewed almost instantaneously.

VoIP
This stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol which allows you to make long distance phone calls via your computer.

Wireless Broadband
Wireless broadband is where a connection is made to the internet without the need for wires, for example when using a laptop or mobile phone.
