Changing your broadband package

You'll regularly come across an broadband offer that seems better broadband package than the one you're on.

But should you change your internet service provider whenever a better deal comes along - what exactly is involved and is it really worth it?

Well, if you're thinking about making the switch then firstly you should shop around...

Shop around
Before you look elsewhere for a new deal, check first with your existing supplier.

Broadband companies don't want to lose customers, so they will often offer you a terrific package to make you stay with them.

However, they will rarely be able to beat the best new customer offer available but it's always worth a try.

Use the internet to search for all the broadband packages that meet your needs.

Don't get carried away and opt for something that you don't really need.

Similarly, don't be a cheapskate and choose something that doesn't quite meet your needs.

The right package for everybody is out there... you just have to find it.

So once you've decided that you really want to switch broadband packages and you've identified the package that you want, it's time to get your MAC...

Getting your MAC
Your Mac is your migration authorisation code which allows you to migrate from one broadband provider to another.

You should obtain this code from your current supplier and then give it to the new company.

With the code you can sign up to a new service before your existing one is switched off.

In the past, some customers experienced difficulties getting their MAC from their internet service provider

But Ofcom, the industry regulator, recently announced that all companies are "required to supply consumers with a MAC upon request and free of charge".

So now you have your MAC, you can make the switch...

Making the Switch
The actual process of switching broadband providers is now pretty simply.

All you have to do is inform your current provider of your wish to cancel the contract (you may need a notice period of a week or two)

And then instruct your new provider to set up your broadband for the day after your current contract finishes.

Although you can begin your new package before your old one expires, it is better to make the transition the day after.

In many cases the existence of an old service can cause problems with the set-up of the new one.

In terms of installing the new broadband service, a new driver will probably have to be put on your computer.

Your new broadband supplier will provide you with a CD-Rom (in the post) that will carry out this operation and install everything that is required.

And that is it - your new cheaper or faster broadband connection is complete.
