We live in an increasingly visual world. Of all our senses, our eye sight is probably the one we would miss most. You'd therefore think we would take great care to look after our eyes. However, for most of us nothing could be further from the truth. We tend to be more interested in the wrinkles on our skin or the cellulite on our thighs. And we're supposed to be the more sensible of the sexes! So what can we do to ensure our eyes are healthy and remain that way? All they need is a little care and attention:

- have regular eye check ups. Not only does this monitor your eye sight but it's also your main source of detection for eye related problems and diseases.

- make sure you get at least seven or eight hours of sleep a night. Your eyes need a rest just as much as you do.

- eat a healthy balanced diet full of foods high in vitamins, minerals and essential fats.

- wear sunglasses with full UVA and UVB protection.

- if you use a computer for long periods, take a break every 45 miinutes it is also useful to look away from the screen every 5 or 10 minutes particularly at a far away object.

- wash your hands thoroughly before applying or removing eye make-up.

- be careful when using rich creams around the eyes. This sensitive area is easily irritated and you should try to use the gentlest product you can.

- stop smoking. There is a direct link between smoking and eye related diseases such as macular degeneration
