How to make red hair look ravishing

Long gone are the days when having red hair meant you were just seen as a 'ginger'. Superstars such as Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore have shown redheads can be just as sexy, just as elegant and just as popular as blondes and brunettes. Indeed there are now more women dying their hair red than redheads dying their hair another colour. In a sea of blondes and brunettes, redheads stand out like a teenager at a Cliff Richard concert.

However, it's this very reason why it's so important to get red hair right. As easily as you can stand out for good reasons, you can also stand out for bad reasons. When a redhead has a bad hair day she may as well have a flashing light on top of head. Check out these celebrities who have definitely got it right...

But how do we mere mortals get this look? It's not as difficult as you may think. If you adhere to the following rules you will always be a ravishing redhead

- coordinate hair and make up. Redheads more than anyone else need to think about bringing their hair and make up together. The majority of redheads have very pale skin and many have an undesirable number of freckles. Not all tones and shades of make up will suit women with red hair. Indeed some women will find themselves very limited in their make up options. However, it's vitally important to stick to what makes you look your best. It's all too easy to stray from the path and end up looking like a clown.

- thick isn't necessary good. Although redheads generally have fewer actual hairs than their blonde and brunette cousins, their hair has a thicker feel and can become coarse. This is why when you see children with red hair they look like they could do with a trim. Fortunately, this can be easily remedied with regular conditioning treatment.

- the problem of frizz. If you are a curly redhead your hair will probably have a tendency to turn frizzy. This is fine if you're happy to look like you still in the 80's but for everyone else frizzy hair can be a curse. The more you touch it and try to put it right, the worse it becomes. The best way to combat this is handle the hair as little as possible, particularly when drying it. Fortunately there are many products available today designed especially to control frizzy hair. Almost every leading brand has a frizz control range including shampoos, conditioners, corrective serum and hair calming balm. The John Frieda range is probably the best, although to be honest there is little real difference between expensive designer brands and their cheaper relations.
